The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will force the release of investigative files associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House changed course after months of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a case that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.
Expedited Approval in Congress
Senators proceeded by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
The public have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”
Future Action
This legislation next heads to Trump for his signature. He signaled on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.
Though the president has for an extended period downplayed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the measure over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.
Support and Opposition
Democrats, along with those affected and their supporters who were present in a public section, broke into applause after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who stated he feared the measure would disclose identifying details of individuals involved, potential suspects and others involved in the investigation.
