White House Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions filed for a court injunction to prevent the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
